Pickaway County is home to several charming communities that are rich in heritage and heart. These communities include Ashville, located nine miles north of Circleville; Commercial Point; Darbyville, settled because of its close proximity to Darby Creek; and New Holland, which is located on the Pickaway-Fayette County line. Other communities include Orient; South Bloomfield, a rapidly growing business community located on U.S. 23; Tarlton, the first settlement in Pickaway County; Derby; and Williamsport, home of the Deer Creek Dam Days Festival held each spring. Pickaway County forms the southern portion of the Greater Columbus area.
Circleville is the county seat and largest city in Pickaway County, with a population of 12,000. The Courthouse, built in the 1880s, features a newly installed computer carillon that plays tunes daily. The downtown also features numerous small shops and restaurants. In addition, Circleville supports a strong local school system, has excellent area parks and recreation, and is undergoing rapid, well-managed development.
Circleville is nationally known for its annual Circleville Pumpkin Show, which is held each October and is recognized as the largest festival in the state and one of the top festivals in the United States, drawing more than 400,000 visitors from across the country.
Pickaway County offers the activities of the open countryside with two state parks, Deer Creek and A.W. Marion, offering a variety of outdoor pursuits. Deer Creek also offers overnight accommodations in the lodge and 25 cabins. Slate Run Metro Park offers a working farm showcasing 19th-Century farming techniques.
